Parole for Manson Follower, Would-Be Ford Assassin

Okay.

I've stated my opinion on this before. I have... some sympathy for Squeaky Fromme, which leaves a bad taste in my own mouth sometimes. If you read the book about her life, she made a lot of bad choices and put her faith and self-worth in the hands of the wrong people over and over again, starting with her father.

And, unlike the other Manson women -- the ones who *actually killed people* -- she never seemed to be out from under Manson's spell. As recently as 1994, she was still confiding her love for him and the rest of the family. That was the tragedy about her. She was eligible for parole in 1985 and waived her right to a hearing every year for twenty years. While Atkins, Van Houten, Watson and Krenwinkle have two-stepped in and out of hearings, making their case for release (and ignoring the 8 bodies they left behind) over and over again, she wouldn't even complete an application for parole. Why? Out of guilt, the journalists and biographers suspect, because she hadn't "done for the family" like the others.

I hope this means she's out from under his spell now. Finally. She's 61 years old now. Does she have anyone on the outside waiting for her? Anyone who will help her acclimate to the world outside? Who knows.. I don't think she'll hurt anybody now. She couldn't even then.

But who knows? I hope I'm right.

And I sure as hell hope they don't let anyone else out.

R.I.P. Billy Lee Riley

The Arkansas native who recorded at the same studio, at the *same time* as Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. For those of you who've never heard it, here's his classic (and fantastic!) "Red Hot".

Most recently, it was used as Selma Blair's signature song in John Waters' A Dirty Shame (at 3:39):

Burr Oaks Cemetery: 'Bodies Will Be Indentified'

..and when I say neighborhood, I mean this happened in Alsip -- in the township where I'm going to be living, less than five miles from where I'm going to be living.

....

And all I can think is "at least it wasn't Restvale Cemetery." Because then it would have been *across the street*.

RNC Chairman: Gay marriage will burden small business

Michael Steele's argument against gay marriage is... eerily similar to my mother's objection to it ten years ago: it'll give those queers the same tax breaks and health benefits.

*silence*

...So?

Okay, you know you're party's in trouble when your conservative party leader and a Medicaid-Mom's arguments on an issue are the same.

Karl Hungus: Remembering my Father Through Film

If Karl approves it, this was my comment:

"I lost my father in 2003, two months after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. It ripped a huge hole in my life that has never completely closed. And it was only in the last two years or so that I was able to watch the films we'd watched together and enjoy them: A Hard Day's Night, Stalag 17, Fail Safe, The Bridge Over the River Kwai, Doctor Zhivago, episodes of The Avengers, Secret Agent, Space: 1999, Twilight Zone, Dark Shadows: Resurrection and The Prisoner. Another favourite of his was classic Battlestar Galactica (from which he named me Athena -- but was ultimately overruled).

He worked swing shifts for Anheuser-Busch and he'd often keep late hours to unwind and watch his movies. Often he'd be awake, eating from a plate of pizza rolls, watching them and I'd be passed out next to him on the couch, unable to stay awake at 3 am to watch Alec Guiness or Patrick McGoohan. I finally saw Doctor Zhivago on television in my college dorm room, a full two years after he passed. It was every bit deserving of his praise."

Amazon Crackdown on Gay Books

LiveJournal: Meta-Writer's coverage of the story

How many customers is Amazon willing to lose?

Fuck it. Until they back-pedal (and they will) I'm going with eBay and abebooks for my purchases.

EDIT: "Ma'am, we're releasing a press release tomorrow.." Cue the back-pedalling. Apparently it was a "glitch" in the system that they're working on. And NOT a conscious effort on the part of the company to hide the queer material where the Scared Straight People can't find it. *shakes head*

Nepal supreme court orders full LGBT rights

Point: Nepal has full anti-discrimination, recognition of gender identity and, soon, the right to marry.

Counterpoint: At the same time, they have no Habeus Corpus, no government-funded HIV/AIDS care, no protection from police harassment or brutality.

I don't know whether to wring my hands or count my blessings.

EDIT: I've chosed to do neither and instead to marvel at the truly odd construct of our borders and nations.

Wow, things really *are* tough all over..

White powder sent to Mormon temples

..a lot of good, law-abiding people about to be blamed for either 1) some nutjob who's taking advantage of a contentious situation or 2) one of our own driven to an extremely inappropriate action by an anger, despair and a sense that half of our country's numbers are out to get us. Or even, possibly 3) someone within the church who is panicked by the national protests and wants to discredit the LGBT people who are genuinely, deservedly pissed off at them.

The conspiracy theorist in me is leaning towards #3, but I suspect it's the first.

I'm suprised Sean Hannity and Bill O' Reilly haven't already picked up this story. I want to say "Pray he remains ignorant," but then again those people bash fags and dykes as a matter of employment so they'd be preaching to the coverted if they did. And those numbers *are diminishing*. It's not 2004 anymore, we are not under siege. Don't let these fuckers provoke you.

Don't buy the hype. Know your rights and don't let anyone tell you you don't deserve them.

Sarah Palin's War on Science: The GOP ticket's appalling contempt for knowledge and learning

"This is what the Republican Party has done to us this year: It has placed within reach of the Oval Office a woman who is a religious fanatic and a proud, boastful ignoramus. Those who despise science and learning are not anti-elitist. They are morally and intellectually slothful people who are secretly envious of the educated and the cultured. And those who prate of spiritual warfare and demons are not just "people of faith" but theocratic bullies."

*applauds* The bisexual Buddhist with a bachelor's degree is appeased that she is, in fact, not crazy. Or a bad feminist. Or from "fake America."

I'm sorry. I'm an incredibly learned and curious person who drinks iced coffees from Starbucks and lives in real America who, can't help it!, gets a might "uppity" whenever some prick who's never met her tells her she's "elitist," "crazy," "sinful" or "un-American." I don't think even my conservative friends would call me any of the above.
